Volunteer Spotlight | Kelly McKernan

By: Amanda Fulk, Community Engagement Coordinator

When I think of dedicated volunteers committed to Alexandra House’s mission, Kelly McKernan immediately comes to mind. Kelly has been volunteering with Alexandra House for over ten years and has served in numerous roles positions, including assisting in the kitchen and legal, shelter, and hospital advocacy. However, Kelly found that Speakers Bureau was the best fit for her!

Alexandra House Speakers Bureau is a group of volunteers who attend community events, resource fairs, and other speaking opportunities. They connect community members with Alexandra House’s resources. Kelly shared, “I’m always amazed how people in the community instantly recognize that you are a safe person to talk to about their experiences and how AH helped them or someone they know.  Sometimes, their stories make me so happy because they came out on top!  Other times, my heart just breaks to hear what they are experiencing.  But I’m always glad to provide them support and resources.”

The Speakers Bureau is a vital volunteer program. Volunteers meet with community members in a space where they feel comfortable. Whether community members want to speak with volunteers about services, understand Alexandra House’s vital role in their community, or simply thank them for being there, our Speakers Bureau volunteers are happy to help. Kelly has volunteered for numerous community events and brings comfort and smiles to everyone she interacts with. The Speakers Bureau group is incredibly fortunate to have such a passionate and kind volunteer in Kelly.

Not only do community members connect with Kelly through Alexandra House, but also within the Anoka County community! Kelly was born and raised in Brooklyn Park and has lived in Anoka for nearly 30 years, so she knows the area pretty well! When asked what she looks forward to during summer in Minnesota, she said, “All winter I wait for long summer days! Gardening, hiking, and just being able to be outside!”

Thank you, Kelly, for joining Alexandra House and working with us towards ending sexual and domestic violence. Thank you for sharing your bright and fun energy with us! We are grateful to have you!
